Shanghai

(From now on, posts should be considerably shorter.  I can’t write that much every time.)

We awoke late, some from a drunken slumber and others from a long-day-of-travel-plus-jet-lag slumber.  We began our journey to a must-see tourist destination (whose name I now forget) at about 1 pm.

On our walk we spotted about 10 guys, maybe 17 years old, shooting some hoops.  During my last visit to Vanderbilt, the guys and I had played a pickup football game which went down in the history books, so we decided another was in order.  We played a warm up game, 4 v 4, with Kei playing on Team China.  No official score was kept, but I think we won 25-2.  Warm, we started a new game, first to 3.  We took a commanding 2-0 lead, but after some intentional missed shots and a missed travel call, wound up losing 3-2.

If you haven’t been to China and plan on going, you should know about the smog.  It covers the big cities, making breathing difficult and running impossible.  Needless to say, after our loss we were all breathless.

We proceeded toward our destination, and after a few brief detors into fake watch markets, arrived at the pond.  Upon arrival, I realized i had been there before with my family, so I sort of zoned out.  We walked around for a bit, and as we stood around debating the location of the the famous dumpling house, a pale white guy with a fu man chu walks up to me and says “Yo man!”  I didn’t recognize him until he said “we went to Costa Rica together.”  I slowly recalled his name (Colin Staton) and we had a nice conversation.

Colin directed us to the dumplings, which we inhaled, and then we left for the hotel.  The guys’ friend from school happened to be studying abroad in Shanghai and had loose plans to go out with him that night.  After dinner, though, we collectively fell asleep.  I shared a twin bed with Sam, which barely fit either of us.  Luckily for me, I was still so sleep deprived that I slept pretty well.  He did not.
