Happy New Year everyone. Out here the Jewish New Year is coming to a close (give it a few hours). I did not go to work today but instead went to a synagogue on Mercer Island called Herzl-Ner Tamid. I really enjoy synagogue, often because it forces me to reflect on things at a higher level than the constant tasks presented by everyday life.
To me Rosh Hashanah is a funny holiday. It is almost a warm up for the big one, namely Yom Kippur. Many of those present had not, it seemed, been at shul since the previous year’s high holidays. The beginning of the service was quiet and mostly hummed, and by the end it seemed people were ready to go home and eat. It is not a somber holiday, nor do the ceremonies suggest that we reflect on the previous year. We begin to think about it (the past year) but do not really conclude things.
I personally like the warm up. I prayed without fasting, so I wasn’t delirious or anything like that. I will be making phone calls to as many of you as possible to ask for your forgiveness and to catch up; the New Year has reminded me of the Old Year I guess. My sister and I met some people at synagogue and it will be nice to see some friendly faces.
Anyway, if I don’t call you, I am sorry and don’t be offended. I want to say to anyone who is reading this that I apologize for anything that I have done to you in the past year, and that I hope you forgive me.
Shanah Tova to all of you.
