A day off

I get a day off today, and if you don’t know why, that is too bad.
Still, it’s been a long year. I don’t want to rehash old times. Here’s a quick recap for those who missed 2008.

How an iPhone saved some lawyers: the true story

My parents came to visit this week and my father told me this cool story, which I will share with you.  He’s a lawyer at a firm in DC called Robbins Russell currently working on a large and complex bankruptcy case.  Specifically, his firm represents a group of creditors suing some other creditors on behalf [...]

Charitable donations: who, and how much?

Today I am working on my charitable donations, which I try to do about this time every year.  “Try” here is nearly synonymous with “fail”.  At the end of every year I sit down at my desk and I start thinking about donations, and I always get overwhelmed.  Who should I give to?  How much [...]

A Jewish Christmas

My friends always wonder what we Jews do on Christmas, and since I had a pretty standard Jewish Christmas yesterday, I thought I would tell you about it.
First rule of thumb: fly on Christmas day.  The day has no special meaning for Jews, but for everyone else, Christmas is a time for family, not travel.  [...]

Argumentative writing

A history of thought

I’m a fan of history, as most of you know. I found this picture, and thought I would share:

Brain Scientist describes having a stroke

Like all thing on Ted, this video of Jill Bolte Taylor is so cool.  In the video, the brain scientist describes having a stroke.  I particularly like how she switches from describing the events scientifically and also as she felt them.  She gets a little spiritual for me at the end, but then again I [...]

App prediction comes true

About 3 days after my prediction that better web creation software is on the way, I heard about Weebly, which claims to do just that.  I poked around and it looks like the drag-and-drop interface is pretty intuitive.  The site, aimed at non-technical users, lets you choose your own design, add content, and publish, all [...]

Credit where credit is due aka colophon

In publishing, printers often append a description of the technical details of their tools, which they call a colophon.  Now that the site design has settled down a little (don’t tell me you didn’t notice each and every change?), I thought I would give a little credit.
In the top right corner you see that email [...]

Oddities of working at a big company

Here are two facts, which each seem obvious and inconsequential at first glance

the longer you work at a place, the more you deserve a nice office
the longer you work at a place, the more meetings you have (1)

Let’s assume that a person’s meetings mostly don’t happen in his office, since at least 1 participant will not [...]
