Contextual Understanding

Here’s a problem I like to think about on occasion.  How does context work in conversation?  I usually think about it in the context of robotics.  If you were programming a robot, or for that matter, teaching a child, how would you explain that these two statements means the same thing:

“Please try not to be late.”
“I won’t”

“Please try not to be late.”
”I will.”

Obviously we learn it, and it must not be too hard, since nearly everyone does.  But I can never figure it out.  A CS grad student at school wrote about this kind of stuff, and I was pretty interested in his research.  I never really understood it.

My friend Carlos probably knows all about this stuff.  He just got a job at this place called Kiva Systems.  He knows a lot.

That’s all.  Now go think about it.
